Pre Planninng

Pre-planning your funeral

Preplanning your funeral can be an act of caring and love for your friends and family members.  This way they will know exactly what you want for your final ceremony.  Preplanning gives you peace of mind and a sense of control. Here are some things to keep in mind.

Share with others; It is your funeral, memorial service or celebration of life.  Make sure you write down and speak with your family about your wishes.

To listen is important:  Find a Funeral Director who will listen to your wishes instead of imposing his or her thoughts.  All plans need to be your decision.

Make Decisions:  Make decisions on who receives your assets before you pass away.  One suggestion is to write some information on the item that you’re giving to someone.  This way there is some history of the item and some memories of why it was so special. One individual used color coded dots to represent who should receive the item.

Prepaying your funeral

After you have made the decisions for your ceremony, you may want to consider paying for your funeral in advance.  Here are some things to know:

Burial / Funeral Polices:  Most funeral homes have an individual who handles all the pre funding of your services. This person should have an Insurance License in the state of Colorado.  Funeral homes insure your pre-arranged funeral with a policy so that your funds are protected and secured.  The Insurance Company then becomes the administrator of the policy and the death benefits.  Many policies will pay the full amount after the second year.   Burial/Funeral policies will freeze the cost for most services that the funeral home will provide.  Policies can also be protected from Medicaid by making them irrevocable.  Policies with Insurance companies are also transportable, which would follow the Insured in case they move.

Preplanning and Prepaying your final wishes might seem overwhelming, make sure that you understand everything and have all your questions answered before signing any documents.
