Leaving a Legacy – Part 2
In “Leaving a Legacy” part 1, I share with how my Paternal Grandmother shared her legacy through stories and writings.
There are several different ways to share your Legacy. The following suggestions take time and also some thought, however in the end it can be treasured by future generations.
Spending time with your Children and Grandchildren: This is easier said than done, with technology and distance pulling the family further apart. Make this a priority, we all know how fast time passes and we have all heard stories about someone dying to soon and not being able to share. If you are unable to visit in person, set aside some time during the week to take advantage of technology, to spend time with those you love.
Write your life story: While this can be intimidating, it can be as simple as beginning with where you were born, information about your parents and any information you can remember about the generations before you. Continue with events from your childhood, lessons you learned, etc. The special meals or cookies you make can be passed on through recipe cards from generation to generation. I would recommend that you write these in your own handwriting.
Create a video: Sounds strange, but this is actually a great idea. Keep the mood light and upbeat, it should not be a “now that I have died video”. Not only can you share your story, your children and grandchildren can also hear your voice and enjoy your, laughter, expressions and mannerisms. This can be set up in an interview format with someone who asks questions about your life. While it may be hard to view right after your death, in time it will become a treasure.
